The Acoustical Commission of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

Prepared for Noise/News International, 1997 June
There are two Member Societies of International INCE in Hungary, the Acoustical Commission of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Scientific Society for Optics, Acoustics, Motion Pictures, and Theater Technology (OPAKFI).
The Member Society Profile for this issue is the Acoustical Commission of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; the profile for OPAKFI appeared in the March issue.
The former has been a Member Society of International INCE since 1978, and the latter since 1989.

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences was founded as the highest scientific body in the Hungarian Republic. The task of the H.A.S. is to study all branches of science. This means providing leadership and coordination of research in fundamental, theoretical, and experimental investigations within the scope of applied science.

The tasks in scientific fields that belong to the H.A.S. are implemented through Sections and Committees. The Sections of the H.A.S. are the following:

  1. Section of Linguistics and Literary Sciences
  2. Section of Philosophy and Historical Sciences
  3. Section of Mathematics and Physical Sciences
  4. Section of Agricultural Sciences
  5. Section of Medical Sciences
  6. Section of Technical Sciences
  7. Section of Chemical Sciences
  8. Section of Biological Sciences
  9. Section of Economics and Law
  10. Section of Geo- and Mining Sciences

In addition to the above Sections, the H.A.S. Presidium may organize committees for the study of certain branches of science within the Sections. The Presidium defines their duties, and appoints a head of each committee. A committee within this structure works in the specific branch of science as a scientific Section; its tasks are defined by the Presidium.

The H.A.S. is a major resource in the fields of natural and technical sciences in Hungary. Many famous scientists are now or were members of the H.A.S. The Nobel Laureate George Bekesy became an ordinary member of the H.A.S. in 1942. The Acoustics Committee is the highest scientific forum in acoustics, and has been in existence as a working panel of Scientific Section III of the H.A.S. since 1961. This committee organized the 7th International Congress on Acoustics in Budapest in 1971. More than 1400 participants attended this meeting which was a great success.

In 1981, the membership of the committee was increased by scientists coming from Sections I, V, VI, and VIII. Since that time, the official name of this committee is the Complex Acoustics Committee of the H.A.S. Professor Tamas Tarnoczy was the Committee president for 31 years. The current chairman is Dr. Gordos Geza. There are 26 members of the Committee; the Working Panels of the Committee cover the following specific areas:

  • Audiology and Hearing
  • Building Acoustics
  • Electroacoustics
  • Linguistics, Acoustics, and Speech Technology
  • Noise and Vibration Control
  • Machine Acoustics
